Sherrie, known as "That chick pickin on the porch",plays many instruments, ukulele, 6 string banjo, mandolin, and 5 string banjo being among them. She teaches online using Facebook video chat and teaches women and young ladies exclusively. Inquiring males have proven to be "too questionable" for her to consider teaching men. She loves Swing and Gypsy Jazz,in addition to Blues,Old TIme Music and Bluegrass.
Mandolin
What had attracted me to mandolin originally was the portability and how many different genres you could play with this instrument. I had originally wanted to take it up in the 90's,but my life was in a swirl and I hadn't yet learned to make myself a priority and draw lines of "do not cross". And of course other people took advantage of that,so all my time was taken up and no time for music. (I take my share of responsibility on that as I allowed it to happen!)
When my life completely fell apart in 2000-2002,I found myself back home, recovering from an operation, and eventually at a part time job. In 2003,I purchased a Kentucky mandolin that I still play to this day. Of course,if the seller had been up front and told me it needed setting up,I'd been playing more much more than I did initially. I had a slow start, but once it was set up,playing gradually increased.
I taught myself to read music for it,learned melodies, mostly bluegrass and old time tunes. All things led to my beginning to teach beginning mandolin online.
Teaching women bluegrass,Old Time, blues, and 1920's tunes means everything to me. Mandolin can be easy to learn if you go about it the right way. I start you with picking melodies, and as fingers get more nimble, you'll start learning chords. While I'm big on music reading,I don't teach that to beginning students as I feel it's more important to play songs and build confidence.

The music of the 1920's became a new love of mine by taking up ukulele some years later.I realized I enjoyed blues and the 20's tunes a lot and wanted to recover the mandolins "lost years" in the 1920's when the ukulele eclipsed it in popularity. So now I'm offering beginning mandolin classes that offer learning tunes in both these genres for those who may not appreciate bluegrass or old time tunes.
